Review for Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games
By Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games is Book one in a trilogy. It is a futuristic young adult novel with adventure and first love.

Life isn’t easy or fair. In a confined town for their “protection” families toil in the coalmine community. Katniss Everdeen has poached the surrounding woods so she can feed her unsound minded mother and gentle hearted sister. Once a year a raffle is held for children, twelve to eighteen years old. Two from each of the twelve districts are drawn. When Prim’s name is called, Katniss volunteers to take her little sister’s place in a competition that pits each member to the death.

Peeta Mellark is drawn as her partner. Their chances are slim and none because their survival is based on what their mentor can collect from sponsors. That’s tough because their mentor, Haymitch, is considered a drunkard and a fool, Peeta is a baker’s son, and although she’s an expert hunter, the thought of taking somebody’s life sickens her. A gimmick might swing the sponsors in their favor. Doomed romance. Can they continue their charade?

I mainly read this book because it is being made into a movie, my favorite media. You’ve probably already seen the trailer for it. If you haven’t, you can find it on the internet. Like many young adult novels, Ms. Collins doesn’t give a lot of details or backstory. A lot of the novel is about going into the capitol, eating delicacies, and for a few days being pampered like royalty. Maybe it’s seeing how controlling and scarce her life is before the competition, then seeing her being decorated and stuffed like a turkey, only to have them take it away and pitting her into PTS that makes me root for her. If you’re going to see the movie, I always recommend reading the book first. Did I like the book? It was better than some I’ve read, and I want to read book two. I won’t tell you why, though. You’ve got to read book one for yourself.
